Will I post more in 2012? I don’t know – it takes a lot more work than I thought. Or at least I just don’t have the habit of posting.
This year was my first Christmas in Taiwan. There were plenty of decorations and lights around, but I found myself thinking “it doesn’t feel like Christmas”. Part of the reason was that I’m living in a subtropical island (which can be surprisingly cold) and there’s no snow on the ground. The grass is green and there are even some trees that are flowering.
I happened to mention that “it doesn’t feel like Christmas” and the reason why to someone who just moved to Taiwan a month ago. His reply was, “Christmas is about Jesus not about the weather.” At the time I merely replied, “you’re right.” But my first thoughts of “it doesn’t feel like Christmas” is how humans tend to treat Christmas. It’s all about feelings and people feeling happy. But Christmas isn’t about the weather, it’s not about decorations, it’s not about how I feel, it’s celebrating Jesus Christ coming down to this earth. We celebrate Christmas because Jesus came not to be served, but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many.
